Monitoring and Novel Applications of 220kV/500kV Egyptian Grid Parameters Using family of PMU based WAMS

Egypt is moving towards smart grid infrastructures to enable efficient bidirectional power supply with reduced carbon footprint. The target smart grid will feature distributed energy generation with renewable energy systems. With the improvement of wind power technology in Egypt, increase of wind power capacity, the impact of wind power on the grid has become an important research topic as well. Smart Grids are facing new challenges, such as increasing penetration of renewable energy sources, in particular wind generation, growing demands, limited resources, and competitive electricity markets. The technology of synchronized phasor measurements is well established. It provides an ideal measurement system with which to protect, monitor and control a power system, in particular during conditions of stress. System wide disturbances in power systems are a challenging problem for the utility industry because of the large scale and the complexity of the power system. The Egyptian Wide Area Monitoring System (EWAMS) is wide area system is designed in EGYPT. A family of the PMU are deployed on a real 220kV grid. The Synchrophasor system with wide deployment of phasor measurement units and using high-speed communications to deliver and collect synchronized high-speed grid operating data. The system is cable for coping many of real time applications. Index Terms Wide-Area Measurements, Frequency Monitoring Network, System Architecture, 3G, GPS, Monitoring and Applications.
